Your character creeps forward on their own. The camera slowly pans while your thumbs are off the sticks. That's stick drift, and GTA VI launches November 19, 2026. Before you spend close to $100 on a new controller, know that stick drift repair Burlington gamers can book at Level 2 Repair costs $25 for one stick on a standard DualSense or Xbox Wireless Controller. Or for $40, we fit Hall Effect sticks and you're done with drift.

You're not the only one dealing with it. There were hundreds of posts about stick drift on X this week alone. One Xbox owner posted that their daily-use controller had "stick drift like crazy" after just 10 months, and that a replacement was going back on the Christmas list.

What stick drift actually is

Most PS5 and Xbox thumbsticks use potentiometers. Inside each stick, a small metal wiper slides across a resistive track to tell the controller where the stick is. Every hour of play rubs that track down a little more. Dust and grime get in too. Eventually the controller reads movement when the stick is sitting at rest.

It usually starts small: a slight pull in menus, or a rifle sight that won't hold still. Then it gets worse. Because it's physical wear, it doesn't fix itself, and a firmware update won't fix it either.

A quick at-home test for PS5 and Xbox controllers

Takes a couple of minutes:

  1. Lay the controller flat on a table and take your hands off it completely.

  2. Open a screen that shows live stick input. Your console's settings include controller and accessory options, and some games have a calibration or test screen that shows where each stick is sitting.

  3. Watch the readout. If the stick position moves, jitters or sits off centre while nobody is touching the controller, you have drift.

  4. Flick each stick and let go. It should snap back to dead centre every time.

If the readout stays still, your problem might be a game's deadzone setting rather than worn hardware.

What you can try at home (and why it only buys time)

Two things worth trying first:

  • Compressed air. Tilt the stick to one side and blow short bursts of air around its base. This can clear dust that's throwing off the reading.

  • Recalibration. Some consoles and games let you recalibrate the sticks or raise the deadzone so small, false movements get ignored.

These can help, but they don't reverse wear. Once the track inside the stick is worn, cleaning only buys you a little time, and a bigger deadzone just costs you precision. If the drift keeps coming back, the stick needs replacing.

PS5 controller repair: standard sticks or Hall Effect

For PS5 controller repair Burlington players can count on, we open the controller, confirm which stick is drifting, desolder the worn module and fit a new one. Then we test every axis before it goes back to you. For a standard DualSense, we have two options.

Standard replacement stick. A fresh stick of the same type. It works like new, but it's the same contact-based design, so it can wear out again over time.

Hall Effect upgrade. Hall Effect sticks measure position with a magnet and a sensor. Nothing rubs against anything, so there's no track to wear down. That removes the most common cause of drift. They still need a working spring and a clean, calibrated controller, so we test the neutral reading before handback.

Own a DualSense Edge? Its stick modules use the same contact-based design. See our DualSense Edge repair page and we'll quote your controller.

Xbox controller stick drift fix, Oakville to Hamilton

The standard Xbox Wireless Controller uses the same kind of potentiometer sticks, so drift shows up the same way: a creeping camera, a walk you didn't start, or a bigger and bigger deadzone just to keep things still. The fix is the same too. We replace the worn stick, or upgrade it to Hall Effect so it doesn't drift again.

We see customers from across the area. If you're in Oakville, Hamilton or Milton, Rotary Way is a short drive, and controller repair Hamilton customers are always welcome. Looking for an Xbox controller stick drift fix Oakville side? Same price, same bench. Have an Elite Series 2? See our Xbox Elite controller repair page and we'll quote it separately. Not sure which controller you have? Our controller picker will point you to the right page.

Repair vs. replace: the numbers

Here's what a new controller costs at Best Buy Canada (CAD, before tax):

  • PS5 DualSense: $94.99

  • Xbox Wireless Controller: $84.99

  • DualSense Edge: $269.99

  • Xbox Elite Series 2: $249.99

Here's what controller repair costs at Level 2 Repair for a standard DualSense or Xbox Wireless Controller:

  • One stick: $25

  • Both sticks: $30

  • Hall Effect upgrade: $40

A new standard controller also comes with the same contact-based sticks that drift, so sooner or later you're right back where you started. A $40 Hall Effect upgrade is less than half the price, and it removes the part that wears out. It's the simplest Hall effect stick upgrade Ontario gamers can get without buying a whole new pad.

Fix it before GTA VI launch night

GTA VI arrives November 19, 2026, and you'll want your aim and driving to be spot-on from the first night. Drift that's a little annoying in menus gets a lot worse when you're driving, aiming and running around for hours. Get it fixed now, not the week of launch.

Side note: if your console is running loud or hot, ask about our $99 PS5/Xbox deep clean with fresh liquid metal. We covered why in our GTA 6 overheating post.

FAQ

Can stick drift be fixed? Yes. Cleaning and recalibrating can help for a while. A worn stick needs replacing, though, and a Hall Effect stick removes the rubbing contact that causes most drift.

How long does it take? It depends on the controller and what we find when we open it. Call or drop it off for a quote and we'll let you know.

Do Hall Effect sticks feel different? Most players won't notice a difference in how they feel. The difference is inside: magnets instead of a rubbing contact, so there's no track to wear down.
